the tutu story

tutu is the fashion label created by sisters, Monica and Justine Smith. The label’s designers are Sydney-based and have backgrounds respectively in Clothing Production (Ultimo TAFE) and Industrial Design (UNSW). 

The tutu brand was born in 2005 and since the business’ initiation; Monica and Justine have sold their creations at Kirribilli markets and through their website, tutu.com.au. They are currently distributing their Australian-made clothing through websites and stores within Sydney. 

tutu provides a fresh take on classic looks by setting it’s own trends.  Their designs often feature sharp tailoring, with a strong focus on detail, allowing a sense of individuality to be fashioned within each garment. All products are strictly produced in limited quantities to produce exclusive and often one-of-a-kind designs.

Monica and Justine source their inspiration from a variety of different mediums, ranging from industrial and interior design to pop culture (and it’s icons), through to historical costumes and social trends.

The current Summer 07 collection called “Retro Pop!” is inspired from 1960s Pop Art culture. The garments are coloured in black and white and highlighted with bright yellow, green, blue and red patterned silks and cotton.  This range is bright and fun for celebrating summer this year!

Through tutu’s website and online communities such as myspace, tutu is attracting more hits on its sites every month and expanding consumers’ knowledge of its existence.

For 2007, Monica and Justine Smith are pushing the label forward to the public to expand as a competitive brand.
